The National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that caters to the needs and interests of all learners. At Key Stage 1, children study a range of ‘core’ subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, and Computing (ICT), alongside ‘foundation’ subjects such as Art and Design, Design and Technology (DT), Geography, History, Music, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Physical Education (PE), and Religious Education (RE).

To support their learning, we use the CUSP English scheme and White Rose Maths, while other subjects are taught through half-termly topics from the International Primary Curriculum. Religious Education (RE) is taught according to the Bexley Agreed Syllabus  and PSHE follows the Cambridgeshire Scheme.

In Year 1, children take the National Phonics Screening Check in the summer term to assess their decoding skills. If a child does not meet the expected standard, they will have the opportunity to retake the assessment in Year 2.

Although Key Stage 1 assessments are no longer statutory, at Chatsworth we continue to use these assessments to monitor and support children’s progress. These assessments provide us with valuable insights into each child’s strengths and areas for development, allowing us to tailor our teaching to meet their needs and help them reach their full potential as they continue their educational journey.
