At Chatsworth, we use assessment alongside our day-to-day knowledge of each child to understand how they are progressing and to identify their next steps in learning.

As an infant school, two of the key statutory measures during a child's time with us are the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile and the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.

Early Years Foundation Stage – Good Level of Development

At the end of Reception, children are assessed against the Early Years Foundation Stage Early Learning Goals.

A child is considered to have achieved a Good Level of Development (GLD) if they have met the expected level in the prime areas of learning, as well as literacy and mathematics.

In 2025/26, 85% of children at Chatsworth achieved a Good Level of Development.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

The Phonics Screening Check takes place towards the end of Year 1 and checks how well children can use their phonics knowledge to decode words.

In 2025/26, 98% of children at Chatsworth met the expected standard in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.

Children who do not meet the expected standard in Year 1 receive further support with phonics and take the check again in Year 2.
